Ephesus

Ephesus is located in west coast of Turkey where Cayster River flows into Aegean Sea. Ephesus was an harbour city in ancient Ionian. But Cayster River's alluvions filled its harbour and cut it away from the sea. Today, Ephesus is aproximately 3 km away from Selçuk/Izmir.

Because of the fact that Ephesus changed its place a lot in history, its ruins spread in an area of 8 km. Today Ephesus is visited by nearly 1.5million people per year.

Ephesus is the world's first totally marble-made site. Here are some of the important ruins of Ephesus:


Apollon Temple: One of the seven wonder's of the world. First marble-made temple of ancient world.



Magnesia Gate and East Gymnasium: Ephesus has two main gates. One of these, Magnesia Gate, is located on the road to Virgin Mary's house. The other one, East Gymnasium, is near Magnesia Gate. Gymnasium was a school in ancient Rome.

Odeon: Odeon was a small salon for plays and concerts, seating about 1,500 people.The upper part of the theatre was decorated with red granite pillars in the Corinthian style. The entrances were at both sides of the stage and reached by a few steps.


Celcus Library: This structure is one of the most beautiful structures of Roman time. The structure is library and at the same time a monument. It was built in the name of ancient Ephesus' governor Celsus. The structure was restored between 1970-1980.Directions:
